For Hudson, few things trump a morning sword fight. After a quick breakfast, he picked up his map pointer stick and formally challenged me to a duel.
I grabbed a nearby yardstick, until he politely but firmly explained, “That is just for measuring things!” and instead climbed into his closet and emerged with a pirate sword from last year’s Halloween costume – obviously a far more appropriate choice.
After a pretty relentless battle, I was struck in the side. It didn’t look good for a while, but I came to, and we joined forces against the mean balloon pirate, which we made by drawing a face with an eye patch onto a balloon.
After a moment of valiant sword fighting, Hudson paused and pulled the balloon down to his level for a man to man chat. In his most fatherly tone, he told Balloon Pirate that he, “really shouldn’t look so mean, because that’s really not so nice and that’s not how we should look at our friends.” Midway into his lecture, he began wiping Balloon Pirate’s angry mouth away.
And before long B.P. underwent a makeover. Now, he has a much friendlier outlook! Man do I love the way this boy’s mind works. 🙂
